Physical Therapist (PT) Travel Licensing

Everything travel PTs need to know about national certification, state-by-state licensure, interstate compact privileges, and tips for multi-state practice.

National Certification

🎓 Federation of State Boards of Physical Therapy (FSBPT)

Required exam: NPTE (National Physical Therapy Examination)

The NPTE is required for PT licensure in all US states. Passing scores are transferred directly to state boards via FSBPT. Most states also require a jurisprudence exam covering state-specific practice laws.

State Licensing Process

Travel PTs face the challenge of maintaining licenses in multiple states simultaneously. The PT Compact has dramatically simplified this for therapists whose home state is a member — compact privilege can be activated in days rather than weeks.

1. Pass national exam

Complete NPTE (National Physical Therapy Examination) with a passing score. Official score reports are sent directly to state boards in most cases.

2. Choose your home state

Your first license is your "home state" license for compact purposes. Choose wisely — ideally a compact member state with fast processing.

3. Apply for endorsement

Each additional state requires an endorsement application. Gather all required documents before submitting — incomplete apps cause delays.

4. Activate compact privileges

If PT Compact available in 40+ states, activate compact privileges in member states instead of completing full applications.

Interstate Compact Status

PT Compact available in 40+ states

The Physical Therapy Licensure Compact allows PTs and PTAs holding an active, unencumbered license in a compact home state to practice in other compact member states by activating compact privilege. Over 40 states currently participate. Verify current membership at PTCompact.org.

Multi-State Licensing Tips

  • Always apply for your next state license 6–8 weeks before you need it
  • Track all license expiration dates and CE deadlines in one place
  • Consider keeping California and New York licenses active — expensive to reacquire
  • Use FSBPT's online portal to manage score reports and verifications
  • Confirm whether a state offers a temporary license while your full app processes
