Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) Travel Licensing

Everything travel SLPs need to know about national certification, state-by-state licensure, interstate compact privileges, and tips for multi-state practice.

National Certification

🎓 American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA)

Required exam: ASHA Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC-SLP)

ASHA's Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology (CCC-SLP) is the national credential for SLPs. While not universally required for licensure, CCC-SLPs are preferred or required by most employers. Some states have additional state-specific requirements beyond the Praxis examination.

State Licensing Process

Travel SLPs currently must complete a full endorsement application in every state they practice — there is no active interstate compact. This makes multi-state licensing more time-consuming for SLPs compared to PTs and OTs.

1. Pass national exam

Complete ASHA Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC-SLP) with a passing score. Official score reports are sent directly to state boards in most cases.

2. Choose your home state

Your first license is your "home state" license for compact purposes. Choose wisely — ideally a compact member state with fast processing.

3. Apply for endorsement

Each additional state requires an endorsement application. Gather all required documents before submitting — incomplete apps cause delays.

4. Activate compact privileges

If No active SLP compact yet — full endorsement required, activate compact privileges in member states instead of completing full applications.

Interstate Compact Status

No active SLP compact yet — full endorsement required

A formal SLP interstate compact is under development but not yet fully operational as a nationwide system. Travel SLPs must rely on traditional state-by-state endorsement. See our SLP Compact status page for updates on when an SLP compact may be available.

  • Keep CCC-SLP current — required by most travel agencies
  • Track state CE requirements — they vary significantly for SLPs
  • Ask your recruiter which states are fastest to license in for future planning
